A fisherman is in a "conscious and stable" condition after being been rescued after being swept off Piha's Lion Rock in west Auckland.

Emergency services were called just before 10am this morning after he fell into the water.

Police say a helicopter and boat were sent to the scene, where the man was found drifting around Nun Rock, around 800m from Lion Rock.

He was brought to shore, is described as being in a good condition and emergency services were deciding whether he needed to be taken to hospital as a precaution.

It's understood that the man was wearing a life jacket.
