What does it take to get a body like World Beauty Fitness and Fashion Pro Jaco De Bruyn?

As well as being an internationally recognised fitness model, he boasts one of the most aesthetic physiques in the world.

So how does he do it? Is there any hope for the rest of us?

All good things come in lists, so here are his top three tips:

Of course, it's not as simple as that. Sacrifice plays a big part in the end game, De Bruyn says.

"For me now, sitting here, it's probably almost 11 years of hard work. Training in the gym every day, constantly focussing on what I eat, it becomes a lifestyle.

"It's a very selfish sport, you know. I think a lot of people lose friends and girlfriends and wives over this sport, because I think they struggle to have that balance."

Such a lifestyle requires extreme discipline of both the mind and the body. But it can be damaging.

Research from the University of Sydney found men are four times more likely to suffer from body image issues than women.

"The additional stigma towards men is that they are less masculine by virtue of suffering from a stereotypically female problem," the authors say in the study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.

Which is why De Bruyn says people shouldn't push themselves to work or eat like someone else. After all, nobody knows your body better than you.

De Bruyn is currently in Auckland for the New Zealand Fitness Expo at ASB Showgrounds.

His final words of advice?

"What the mind believes, the body achieves".
