Police are searching for a man who attempted to steal from a car in the Invercargill suburb of Grasmere on Monday night.

The man - who police say was wearing a dark hoodie and was between 1.65m and 1.83m in height - fled from the car on foot after being confronted by its owner at about 10:30pm.

The perpetrator is said to have run off the resident's property, across train tracks and towards Ross St in Invercargill.

Police are also on the lookout for a white Ford Falcon seen on the same night, a vehicle they say is "of interest".

They urge those who have seen suspicious activity in the Grasmere area or have information about Monday's incident to call Invercargill Police on (03) 211 0400.

They also ask anyone who has been a victim of crime that has gone unreported to call police or anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
