NZ families issued 'green prescriptions'

Families across New Zealand are being encouraged to swap doctors' prescriptions for a new concept known as the "green prescription".

It involves cooking lessons, and fitness classes as ways of tackling childhood obesity.

The Falala family are one of 1000 families taking part in the programme, and after two months, they are seeing results.

With three children aged 5, 9 and 15 Iunisi and Lisiate Falala used to opt for cheap, easy and often unhealthy food, but now they've ditched the takeaways in favour of experiencing new food together.

The Minister of Health Jonathan Coleman says 87 percent of families say there have been positive changes for their child as a result of the programme.

"They may be more active, have a more positive attitude to life, they're enjoying school more, and are more positive about the types of food they should be eating and the activity they should be doing," he says.

It's hoped that as more people are referred to the programme, the attitudes of families will change to a long-term healthier lifestyle.
