Three people have been airlifted off a snow-clad mountain in Nelson Lakes National Park.
The trio set off their emergency locator beacon late on Monday afternoon, sparking a search by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue helicopter.
They built a snow cave near the Travers Saddle before being rescued and flown to Nelson Hospital the same evening.
Two were suffering from hypothermia.
The rescue helicopter crew said they initially had trouble finding the three people because of a poor beacon signal but further satellite hits were able to pinpoint their snow cave.
