Housing Minister Nick Smith has come just metres away from his housing supply being cut even further, after a speeding driver careened into his Nelson property on Saturday night.

The MP posted photos of the incident on his Facebook account on Sunday morning, claiming the vehicle's driver was "drunk as a skunk" when he hurtled through a railing and into his garden.

Images of the scene show the battered car hanging from a bank on Dr Smith's property, less than 10 metres from the external wall of his house.

Dr Smith said the driver was spotted driving at 130km/h and running a red light earlier in the evening, just moments before coming to a sudden stop in his backyard.

The driver was taken to hospital in an ambulance and was treated for minor injuries, Dr Smith said.

Some Facebook users saw the lighter side and took the opportunity to berate Dr Smith for what they see as his failing to make strides in battling the housing crisis.

"He's probably sick of living in that car and decided to send a message to the Housing Minister!" one commenter wrote.

Dr Smith said he was spending his Sunday clearing trees blocking his garage, after the speeding car knocked them out.
