The son of slain police dog Gazza will have big paws to fill, as he rises to the rank of police puppy.

The Police Dog Trust introduced young Orr on Facebook today, in photos with his dad's handler Josh Robertson.

Four-year-old German shepherd Gazza was shot dead by Porirua siege gunman Pita Tekira in April.

His handler says he blocked a gunshot that would otherwise have hit him.

When Gazza died, Wellington Police said his legacy would "live on" because he was part of its breeding programme.

And that looked set to be the case as Gazza's nephew was chosen to join the K9 team, with the public choosing to name him Kazza in honour of his fallen uncle.

But in a tragic turn of events Kazza died after just two months with his Whanganui handler.

Now it's up to Orr to continue the family legacy.
