The identity of the person whose body was found on a boat has been confirmed as 55-year-old John Murray Morton of Nelson.
Mr Morton's body was discovered in the back of a white boat at Nelson Haven, opposite a skate park on State Highway 6, on Thursday morning.
His death is being treated as suspicious and police say he had been assaulted.
Mr Morton did not own the boat where his body was found.
Police were able to remove his body from the scene on Friday evening and a post mortem will be carried out in Christchurch on Saturday.
A scene examination by police is ongoing. The road is now fully open, although speed restrictions are still in place.
Police are continuing to speak to witnesses and associates of Mr Morton and are hoping to build a picture of his movements prior to the discovery of his body.
