The reopening of Wellington's iconic cable car after a multi-million dollar upgrade has been further postponed until later this week.
The service, which began 114 years ago, has been closed since June and its resumption was set for Monday, before being put back to Wednesday.
The scheduled return will now be Friday morning and all trips up and down the hill from Lambton Quay to Kelburn will be free that day.
Wellington Cable Car Co chief executive Simon Fleisher says Wellington City Council and its contractors need some extra time to get essential building work completed and have full building consent signed off.
If things go well, the cable car could start running again before Friday and the public will be notified of any change, he says.
A total of $5 million is being spent on the upgrade of the carriages, the winding gear and Cable Car Lane.
