Whanganui police are investigating after a teenager was assaulted on Sunday morning around 1am.

The 17-year-old man was walking along the path between the War Memorial Hall and the Whanganui City Library when he was assaulted by another man and knocked to the ground.

He required medical treatment as a result of the assault.

Police say the assault was likely witnessed by members of the public, and they would like to hear from anyone who saw the assault or was in the area at the time.
