University of Otago marine scientists are buzzing after what they're calling an extraordinarily successful trip to the sub-Antarctic Islands.
The expedition team spent 22 days in the area in near-perfect conditions.
They were surveying the right whale population from their vessel, the Polaris.
By using a drone with a tiny laser on it, they were able to take exact measurements of the whales.
Steve Dawson says the drone footage gives a great insight into the whale population's recovery rate.
