Every year a large number of Kiwis lose their lives in the water, and 2016 has been no exception.

Fifty-three people have drowned in New Zealand waters so far this year - a staggering majority of them, 46, were adult males.

It comes after the body of a man believed to be a whitebaiter washed ashore on a Southland west coast beach. 

The 68-year-old was found in Martins Bay on Thursday night shortly after police began and volunteers began searching for him. It's believed he was swept away with the tide.
