Man arrested over fatal Ashburton stabbing

The man fatally stabbed in Ashburton overnight has been named as Tainui James Wano.

Neighbours have reported hearing death threats, including a man threatening to stab someone in the throat, before police discovered the 25-year-old's body on Tuesday night.

A 23-year-old man, from Allenton, appeared before the Christchurch District Court this morning on a charge of murder. He was granted interim name suppression, did not enter a plea or apply for bail, and was remanded in custody to reappear at the High Court in Timaru on October 4.

Meanwhile, forensic teams have been combing both the front lawn and inside of a property on McDonald St.

A woman living nearby, Selina Griffiths, told Newshub she heard a man shouting, 'I'm going to f**king kill you" around 10:30pm.

"I heard a really angry guy across the road, and the language I can't use here, but threatening to kill someone, saying he was going to stab them in the throat," she says.

"I didn't hear anything else, and I sort of peeked out the window and saw a guy out there, he was on his cell phone, I don't know whether he was ringing or texting, and then it went quiet."

The next thing she heard was sirens as police, ambulance and the fire service arrived. There was no screams of pain, other than loud angry death threats and yelling.

Another neighbour spoken to by Newshub described the property as a "party house" which was "known for getting rowdy".

Police have refused to comment while the case is before the courts.
