Missing cow case still boggles police

The disappearance of hundreds of cows from a Canterbury farm remains a mystery.

Police have shelved their inquiry into the alleged theft of 500 cows from an Ashburton dairy farm.

They began investigating the disappearance of the dairy cows a month ago and say they've spoken to a number of people in relation to the alleged theft, but don't have enough information to go on.

It was established the cattle would have been taken a long period of time and that auditing systems and processes may have been open to abuse.

The file remains open, but police will ramp up the investigation again if new information comes in.

Police are urging farmers to review their business practices, systems and auditing processes and make note of checking all potential employees' references and backgrounds before hiring.
