A motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a truck on the Northwestern Motorway in Auckland on Thursday morning.

Police warned drivers that heavy traffic was expected as emergency services and the serious crash unit made their way to the scene of the crash, which occurred just before 10am, with police eager to clear motorway on-ramps to ensure they can get there.

The collision was on the stretch of motorway between St Lukes and Great North Rd.

City-bound traffic was diverted off the Waterview off-ramp, while westbound traffic remained free-flowing.

The motorway was limited to lane between Waterview and St Lukes, but all lanes were reopened around midday.
