Residents in the Marewa area of Napier say they're trapped in their homes as police hunt for three people who are believed to be behind an armed robbery.

Police say two men and a woman used a firearm to steal tobacco items from the League Park Superette at around 6:30pm.

"Police officers and a dog unit are searching in the Marewa area of Napier for three offenders involved in the robbery of a local dairy," says a police spokesperson.

"Police are working with the victim and making efforts to locate the offenders. As the incident is still unfolding Police cannot comment further."

The robbery is the latest in a string of incidents involving the theft of cigarettes, believed to be in support of a rising black market.
