Severe weather warning for Gisborne

MetService has issued a severe weather warning for Gisborne as heavy rain continues, saying slips and surface flooding may hit the area.

Much of the country is experiencing rain on Sunday morning, with a trough moving slowly southwards over the upper North Island preceded by easterly winds and a band of rain.

The weather is expected to intensify over the Gisborne region tonight and continue through to Tuesday morning, during which time 140mm of rain may accumulate about the hills and ranges of Gisborne

The heaviest falls are expected north of Tologa Bay, with the possibility of rain rates of 15 to 20mm per hour.
