Diluted sewage has flowed into Wellington Harbour after a wastewater main burst near the waterfront.

A "limited amount" of sewage made its way into the Whairepo Frank Kitts Park lagoon on Wednesday morning after the pipe broke in Victoria St, near the central police station, Wellington City Council says.

Swimmers are being told to stay out of the lagoon and motorists are also urged to avoid the area with traffic down to one lane.
