A Christchurch dairy has been robbed by three people in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The trio entered the Woolston Night'n Day on Ferry Road around 5am armed with a machete and a hammer.

They then threatened the dairy worker with the weapons before taking off with cigarettes and cash.

Police say the employee "is understandably shaken, but uninjured".

Police are working to locate the offenders.

Statistics New Zealand figures released on Friday show in the year to August, the increase in robberies, extortion and related offences was 15.4 percent.
