Two people have been taken to hospital after a fire that gutted a two-storey house in Dunedin on Sunday.

Fire crews rushed to the scene on Carroll St in the central city after receiving multiple calls at around midday.

The fire is out and two people have been taken to hospital for treatment for non-fire-related injuries, a fire service spokesman said.

He said the property has sustained major damage.

Video of the blaze showed at least two fire engines and a number of fire fighters at the scene, and smoke billowing out of the windows and down Carroll St.

A crowd of onlookers gathered to watch.

It's not clear yet what caused it.
