More than 2000 electric vehicles are now registered and the Government's target of doubling the fleet this year has been exceeded.

Transport Minister Simon Bridges says to date this year there have been 1003 registrations compared with 500 in 2015.

The total number is 2029.

The aim is to double EV registrations each year to reach 64,000 by 2021.

"Registrations show this year there's been a move from the new plug-in hybrids in early 2014 to an increasing number of used EVs in 2016," Mr Bridges said.

"This increasing number of imported used vehicles will diversify the range of EVs on offer and make them more affordable and accessible for a wider range of people and businesses."
