Kiwi captures South's beauty from the edge of space

Stunning South Island images have been captured by a NIWA weather balloon with two cameras attached.

NIWA released the weather balloon to collect data of the New Zealand ozone atmosphere.

The balloon reached heights of up to 27km above Central Otago, making for some unique bird's-eye view videos and photos of the south.

The balloon was intentionally burst and the parachute landed on a farm 2km north of St Bathans.

NIWA atmospheric technician Wills Dobson said he releases balloons weekly from Lauder, near Alexandra.

"The weather was perfect so I slapped two GoPros on it," he says.

"The hardest part was getting the camera back, if the balloon was up for 10 minutes longer we might have lost it."

Dobson said he hoped to capture another photo next winter showing off the snow-capped mountains.
