The contribution older people make to New Zealand is being highlighted because it's the International Day of the Older Person.

Age Concern New Zealand says it's a day for people to combat isolation and loneliness by getting to know the older people in their lives.

The theme of the day is "stand against ageism".

The organisation says everyone should reject stereotypes and focus on the uniqueness of every individual.

They should speak up when they hear people speaking negatively about growing old and question practices they feel are disrespectful to older people.

People should not patronise older people and be patient, polite and friendly.

Above all else, people should have zero tolerance for abuse or neglect of older people.
