Non-profit daycare centre First Five forced out with nowhere to go

Any working parent of preschoolers knows how important it is to find a daycare centre that both the parents and child are comfortable with - and it's not always easy.

It's certainly not easy when that centre is faced with closure, but that's exactly what's happened to First Five in Porirua.

The land it's on is being transferred to Ngāti Toa as part of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement, and the Ministry of Education indicated it would help find an alternative site - but it seems the Government have dropped the ball.

First Five is one of only a handful of non-profit childcare centres, and it takes 24 preschoolers and has six teachers.

It's been four months since the centre was told they would need to find a new home - and the chances are now looking slim.

Ngāti Toa have even gifted them the building, but the problem is that they can't find anywhere to put it.

It would cost up to $35,000 to move the building, which is simply not money the non-profit community centre has.

Toni Collins is on the parents committee and they feel let down by the Ministry - but could the public be the answer? Could you help?
