Police are investigating after a man was dropped off at the Whangarei St John Ambulance station in a critical condition.

He has since died and police are treating it as suspicious.

Part of the ambulance station has been cordoned off, however St John's Northland operations manager Tony Devanney says the station is still fully operational.

Police are working on identifying the man and a post-mortem will be carried out on Wednesday.
