A derelict church at the world's southern-most nudist camp in Southland has been destroyed by a suspicious fire overnight.

A fire investigator is on her way to the abandoned building at the Southern Naturally camp after firefighters reported the blaze as suspicious.

The 30 metre square building at Otautau, which nudist club secretary Wilma Kremer said had never been used by them, was completely destroyed.

"The windows had been taken out and they were sold ... we were in the process of demolishing it but somebody has done that for us," she said.

"The police are still there and the fire people are still there because, I would say, it would take a bit to put out because it's all rimu wood and it's quite big."

The cause of the blaze has not been revealed by the Fire Service, but Ms Kremer said she didn't believe someone would be targeting the club.

Club members are expected to gather at the club later on Friday to begin the clean-up ahead of their open weekend.
