The rescue of a vehicle stuck in the mud at Auckland's Blockhouse Bay has gone from bad to worse over the weekend, with four more vehicles getting stuck.

Crowds of people came to see the unfortunate rescue attempts. For local four-wheel driver Murray the scene was disturbing.

"This ain't what we do... It gives us a bad rap, and we don't need the bad publicity. It's pretty hard for us to get into places right now without idiots like this.

"These guys shouldn't be out here in the first place."

The first vehicle, a Toyota RAV4, got stuck in the mud at the very tidal Manukau Harbour beach on Friday. On Saturday, two more 4WDs that tried to rescue the submerged RAV4 also got stuck.

"They're not using proper equipment, not working as a team for starters, and really the gear's not up to what they should be doing," Murray says.

"It's not good for the environment to be doing this either - these cars are filled with petrol, diesel, oil, and they sit out here and destroy the fishing for everyone else."
