A call to Facebook has seen the community in north Canterbury rally together to compile supplies and donations for those stranded in Kaikoura and Waiau.

Hundreds of people spent the day delivering donated goods to a food bank in Rangiora.

Organiser Larina Tiffen says the call went viral.

"I put a Facebook call out to north Canterbury initially, which is my hometown, and from there it kinda went viral" she says.

"The food is coming in, we have a local church group that's coordinated with the supermarkets."

Ms Tiffen says it even has a personal motivation for her.

"For me, five years ago, three of my family members lost their homes," she says.

"I saw their struggles and how other people in New Zealand got together and got what families needed."

"I know how they're feeling, I know that they need support."

The care packages are being flown up to those affected and the organisers say they'll continue sending care packages for the next few days.
