Kaumatua have blessed the sites of two fatal crashes in Northland overnight as the serious crash unit continues to investigate.

A man died after becoming trapped underwater when the car he was in got stuck in a flooded creek during a heavy downpour of rain at Omanaia, west of Kaikohe, at about 10pm on Saturday.

A second man in the car managed to escape with only minor injuries and raise the alarm.

In the second crash, a man died at the scene after a vehicle he was a passenger in left State Highway 1, hitting a tree, near Towai just after midnight.

The male driver was transported to Kawakawa Hospital in a serious condition.

Inspector Riki Whiu says police want to remind those travelling on roads, in particular in such terrible driving conditions, to drive to the conditions and look after each other.

"Our condolences and thoughts go out to the local families of those that have died in these tragic incidents," he said.

Both deaths have been referred to the coroner
