A Canterbury man's tearful response to an aftershock has been captured by a Newshub camera team, as they interviewed locals in the town of Scargill.

Bryn Davies, 64, is a retired resident of Scargill, having lived there for 13 years. He said his "nerves are frayed" after Tuesday's violent magnitude 5.7 aftershock.

He described the aftershock as "a violent stabbing bang".

A smaller aftershock hit as he was being interviewed by a Newshub team, and the fear and emotion in that moment is clear.

"It's happened to lots of people, lots of times before me and I've gotten away with it, but not this time," Mr Davies said, tears evident as the shaking ceases.
