Two people have been injured and a major South Island highway is closed after a car struck a power pole near Hanmer Springs.
Police say the car ran into the pole on Lewis Pass Rd, SH7, west of Shelly Creek Bridge on Monday, closing a section of the route.
The two people in the car have been flown to hospital with moderate to serious condition, but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Police said the pole was blocking the road between Rogers Crescent and Hanmer Springs Rd and significant delays are expected in the area.
Drivers have been asked to delay travel if possible as contractors clear the highway.
