Road toll climbs after Southland crash

The Labour weekend road toll has climbed to three after a crash between a car and a motorcycle in Southland.

The crash happened on State Highway 99, near Wallacetown, at approximately 3pm.

A 56-year-old man died at the scene, police say. No one else was injured in the crash.

The road has reopened after being closed at Wallacetown and Steel Rd and Underwood-Linds Bridge Rd.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The matter will be referred to the Coroner.

Two people have already died on our roads during this holiday period.

A woman was killed after a head-on collision near Paekakariki on Sunday, while another person died early on Sunday near Pokeno.
