Scientists are keeping a close eye on Mount Ruapehu as volcanic rumblings in the area increase.

Volcanologists say since October 18, tremors around the volcano have spiked in strength multiple times and are currently still going stronger than usual.

Although researchers have not raised the alert level for the area from "minor volcanic arrest", they are closely monitoring Ruapehu.

The crater lake this month also reached a temperature of 40degC and has been hovering around 37degC since, although they are not believed to be related.
