People have been evacuated from their homes in Wellington due to slips, as heavy rain pelts the region.

Two properties were evacuated around 7:30am on Saturday on Balfour Street in Mornington, after a slip came down behind houses.

A stream was diverted by another landslide in Kaiwharawhaura an hour later, forcing three houses to be cleared out.

A third landslide has also come down in the suburb of Northland, with one property advised to evacuate.

Police have also reported that bad weather in the region caused a tree to collapse on Main Road in Tawa. Diversions have been put in place.

Metlink tweeted that Ngauranga Train Station has been closed due to flooding, causing delays for commuters on the Melling and Hutt Valley Lines.
