A serious crash in Whanganui on Tuesday morning has left a woman in hospital and cut power to hundreds of properties.

The crash took place on Mosston Rd just before 4:30am and knocked a power pole onto the road.

When emergency services arrived at the scene they discovered the woman was trapped inside her vehicle.

She was taken to hospital by ambulance with what police have described as moderate injuries.

Police warned Mosston Rd would be closed for several hours as they dealt with the fallen power lines and damaged vehicle, with closures and detours in place between Fox Rd and Tayforth Rd.

They urge people to take care and be patient as power is reconnected in the area.
