A woman killed after she was hit by a truck-and-trailer unit south of Tokoroa was walking along State Highway 1 on a section with no street lighting, police say.
The 46-year-old woman came from the Waikato town.
She was walking along the highway at Kinleith on a narrow area that had a 100km/h speed limit when she was struck at 1:15am on Tuesday.
Senior Sergeant Fane Troy says the driver of the truck was shaken but not injured.
He says people doing any activity near roads should ensure they are wearing clothing that is visible to others.
Police are waiting to contact next-of-kin before releasing the woman's name.
