Greyhound industry accused of breaking promise

Animal rights activists are calling for the gates to be shut for good on the greyhound racing industry.

The Greyhound Protection League (GPL) says for the third consecutive time, the industry has broken a promise to release death and injury statistics by the end of the year.

Instead, they'll have to wait until mid-2017 to find out this year's toll.

"They have actually made the promises to ministers - not just us," says GPL spokesperson Aaron Cross.

"It's been quite a repetitive theme that we'd see some action by the end of the year, but here we are and there's nothing there."

He's accusing the Government of turning a blind eye to the ethical problems to protect the gambling industry.

"We're campaigning to take people's jobs away and it's not something we do lightly. It's something that we do out of necessity because what's happening to these greyhounds is simply too awful.

"We need to look at the ethics of certain activities and evaluate them on their own merits, and that's where I think greyhound racing doesn't stand up."

More than 100 activists protested outside Greyhound Racing NZ's annual AGM in Auckland in October.
