Police are appealing for information after reports of two kayakers possibly going missing by Mahurangi Island off Hahei Beach in the Coromandel.
A man and a woman reportedly left Hahei Beach on a two-person kayak at around 6pm on Thursday.
Flashing lights were later seen offshore in the direction of Mahurangi Island.
No one has yet been reported missing, and Coastguard and helicopter searches failed to find anyone in trouble in preliminary searches.
Police hope to speak to anyone who was in the Hahei Beach area around 6pm Thursday, or anyone who saw the couple around that time.
A possible search is suspended at this stage until more information is known.
