Kaikōura's lost a lot after last month's magnitude 7.8 earthquake, but tonight it's gaining something new, its first ever cocktail bar.

Allure Cafe owner Kathryn Exton is launching the new venture to bring the community together after the quake.

"I just wanted to have a bit of elegance, and a bit of a good vibe for Kaikōura," Ms Exton said.

"There's not many bars in Kaikōura now, there's a few gone from the earthquake so we just wanted to create something new."

Ms Exton said "It's been a real rollercoaster ride" since the quake happened and at her café "everything was just everywhere, it was a huge process to clean it up".

She said that things are finally back to normal and "it's totally beautiful now".

"It's just a really classy little café…and the earthquake's actually inspired me to turn it into a cocktail bar."

Allure will be a café by day and a cocktail bar by night, and a special cocktail menu has been put together.

Ms Exton hopes that the bar will be a hit with locals and tourists so she can make it a permanent fixture.

"I'd like to see everyone just happy and getting in the Christmas spirit, and trying new things."
