A Christchurch man has been jailed for shining a laser light at an oncoming flight in Christchurch earlier this year.

Tane Hemopo, 38, was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison after being found guilty on two counts of endangering safety for shining a laser at a Virgin Airlines flight carrying 121 passenger on April 5.

Judge Tom Gilbert said Hemopo didn't understand the risk his actions caused.

Hemopo has since written a letter of apology to the staff involved.
