A New Zealand nun has died in a car accident in eastern France.

Catholic women's group International Union of Superiors General posted on its website that Maureen McBride suffered a "medical event" while driving near Lyon.

Sister McBride, who was part of The Sisters of the Lady of the Missions (RNDM), had taken fellow congregation members to the airport and train station before crashing on her way back to the commune St Rambert-en-Bugey.

RNDM congregation leader Josephine Kane said in the statement: "We thank God for Maureen and all that she is to all of us".

A Memorial Mass will take place at St Peter and Paul's Church, Lower Hutt, on Thursday, 8 December, at 11am.
