Owning your own chickens: More hazardous than healthy?

When you think of backyard chickens you picture organic eggs and healthy whole foods, right?

You probably don’t think whether they would be hazardous to your health.

But that's exactly what two Auckland families were confronted with when, by chance, they got their hens tested.

Their chickens looked like a box of birds but in fact had lead poisoning. The chickens absorbed lead by pecking around in contaminated soil and it's not good for the chooks or the humans eating their eggs.

Children in particular are at greater risks from the adverse effects from lead because their nervous systems are still developing.
