A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck 10km southeast of the Marlborough town of Seddon on Thursday evening.
GeoNet reports the quake had a strong intensity and a depth of 17km.
It was recorded as happening at 6:41pm and was felt widely in the area, and as far away as Wellington.
