British Prime Minister Theresa May has thanked Prime Minister Bill English for the way British nationals were helped during the Kaikoura earthquake.
Ms May was one of the first prime ministers Mr English spoke to after being sworn in and he says they had a good discussion.
"She was particularly grateful for the way British nationals caught up in the Kaikoura earthquake were dealt with - I was quite impressed that she knew about it, actually," Mr English told reporters on Wednesday.
Mr English has also spoken to Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
"It was a good, constructive discussion," Mr English said.
"I know Malcolm, I met him when he first came into politics.
"I find him an insightful politician who, in his case, has a real respect for New Zealand and has helped our cause considerably with the Australian government."
