Commercial flight forced to land at Air Force base

An Emirates A380 carrying more than 350 passengers has been diverted to an Air Force Base near Palmerston North after an incident at Auckland International Airport.

The runway at the airport was closed after a Singapore Airlines flight aborted take-off on Sunday afternoon.

As a result the in-bound flight from Dubai, via Melbourne, was forced to divert to Ohakea Air Force Base.

Staff at the base told Newshub they were in the process of working out what to do with those on-board the flight.

Some of the passengers have been on board for 18 hours already.

Once refuelling has taken place, the aircraft will fly up to Auckland - arriving around four hours late.
