Investigations continue into massive Upper Hutt fire

The workers at a carpet underlay business in Upper Hutt have been assured they still have a job to turn up to despite their factory being engulfed by a large fire on Friday night.

It's still uncertain what ignited the blaze at the Clouston Park site that sent huge plumes of toxic smoke into the air with polyurethane foam inside the building.

Investigators were sifting through the remains of Acma Industries' factory on Saturday trying to piece together what caused the blaze.

The building, plant and all stock were destroyed, with the heat so great it melted parts of a neighbouring building.

"Seventeen fire appliances were called here in total, about 50 firefighters and operational support personnel here. We had to use aerial appliances on to the building," says assistant area commander Matthew Abel.

Luckily the company is insured so it won't be left out of pocket.

Acma Industries CEO John Bowmar says only three people worked in this building. Those three jobs are safe; however, carpet underlay production is out of action.

The rest of the company's buildings are undamaged, with its polyurethane foam production continuing as per usual.
