Three men are on the run after jumping on a man and assaulting him as he crossed a Waikato bridge.

Two of the men jumped from the bridge's steel frame and confronted the victim on a pedestrian bridge between Main and Bridge Streets in Huntly about 10pm on Tuesday.

They threatened to rob the victim and tried to punch him when a third man struck the victim's leg from behind with an object.

The victim was left helpless by the attack, and fell to the ground in severe pain. He was then struck over the head.

Police say the three men, all described as being over 180cm tall and wearing hoodies pulled over their heads, took the man's wallet and bag and fled toward Main Street.
