Police are assuring Auckland's Torbay community there isn't a dog shooter on the loose.

A woman was walking her dog at Deep Creek Reserve around 7pm on Thursday when it was fatally injured in the chest.

Louise Lumsden posted a picture on a Facebook community page, alleging the animal was shot by a BB gun while he was fetching a stick.

But police say there were no eyewitnesses to the alleged shooting, and no projectile was seen in the dog's x-ray.

"He was only 1-year-old and the best dog ever," she posted.

"Somebody with a BB gun or something similar shot him from the bushes while he was chasing a stick.

"We are gutted and I have two absolutely devastated kids."
