Pulling off a burglary usually takes a bit of smarts, confidence and skill but for two Christchurch people, their plan failed before they even got in the door.

Their first problem was the restaurant they were about to burgle was situated right across the road from a police station.

A 31-year-old  man and 36-year-old woman are facing charges after allegedly breaking into the Cortado Restaurant around 4am on Tuesday morning. The restaurant is just metres away from the Sydenham police station.

The restaurant alarm activated before the pair were seen running from the scene.

Police arrived and apprehended the pair soon after and will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday, charged with burglary.
