Police are confident a 73-year-old woman missing in Auckland is still alive.

The search for Pat Wearn, who was last seen by her husband in Torbay, has entered its fifth day.

North Shore area commander Sunny Patel says although she has dementia, she is a healthy woman.

"The advice that we've been given is that the chances of survivability are likely at the moment, due to her physical fitness and health. She's likely to be dehydrated and disoriented, but expected to survive."

Police want Torbay residents to continue checking their properties for any sign of Ms Wearn.

"Even if they've checked, I asked that they do it again in case they've missed something," says Mr Patel. "Residents in the area should check gardens, check sheds just to make sure Ms Wearn hasn't tried to make shelter for the night and fallen asleep there."

Ms Wearn went shopping with her husband on Monday morning and left home again about midday to go on a regular walk along Caversham Dr, Lingham Cres, Glamorgan Dr, Kate Sheppard Ave and back to Caversham Dr.

She was wearing blue three-quarter length trousers and a patterned top.

It's the first time she's gone missing.
